CARBON REDUCTION PLAN
Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism refers to a responsible and eco-conscious approach to travel that seeks to minimize its environmental, social, and cultural impacts. It prioritizes the preservation of natural resources, supports local communities, and promotes authentic cultural experiences, ensuring that destinations remain attractive and viable for future generations of travellers.
Sustainable tourism is defined by the UN Environment Program and UN World Tourism Organization as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”
We believe caravan parks, like ourselves, play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable tourism, fostering numerous positive impacts on both the environment and local communities. Firstly, they encourage eco-friendly practices by providing recycling facilities, reducing waste, and promoting energy-efficient accommodations, which minimizes the carbon footprint of visitors.
Additionally, caravan parks often collaborate with local communities, supporting small businesses and artisans. This boosts the local economy and enhances cultural exchange. Furthermore, their location in natural settings underscores the importance of preserving these environments. Many parks engage in conservation efforts, educating tourists on the significance of biodiversity and responsible outdoor activities.
In essence, caravan parks epitomize sustainable tourism by harmonizing economic growth with environmental stewardship, offering travellers memorable experiences while leaving a minimal ecological footprint.
Caravan parks, while popular, can strain local resources, generate waste, disrupt ecosystems, and impact local cultures. Recognizing these negative effects is crucial for fostering more sustainable tourism practices in these areas. We, at Manor Wood, continue to minimise all negative impacts and maximise our positive impacts.
What we do to increase our positive impacts
We at Manor Wood have excellent links with local businesses – for example our local pubs, Cock O Barton, Bickerton Poacher and Carden Arms etc... we remain to encourage our visitors to utilise these local pubs and restaurants through advertising their numbers and menus on site. Our café only serves breakfast and light lunches as we encourage evening meals to be sourced locally.
We also help to support our local shops and butchers through advertisement on our park. We have a small shop that only sells the essentials, toothpaste, soap etc and encourage our customers to buy their produce at local shops and meat at butchers.
We also have a great relationship with our local B&Bs and hotels. As many of our customers have family and friends that don’t own caravans or tents and are looking for local hotels, we always advice to what is in the area. Carden park has multiple activities, as well as the hotel which we will always recommend to any of our customers.
Other local attractions such as the ice cream farm and Bewilderwood are heavily advertised here on site. In fact, all local attractions and businesses are laid out in our welcome pack which every visitor receives on arrival.
We also have access to local transport as well as cycle ways and walkways to our local villages.
Ecotourism
At Manor Wood, we are always looking for ways we can improve the way we run to benefit our local economy and help wildlife thrive!
Further to supporting our local area we are also dedicated to sustaining the environment and encouraging wildlife.
This includes:
- We do not use any pesticides and have areas of longer grass to benefit insects. We also have bug hotels around site, manmade as well as felled tree trunks left in place.
- We have a conservation lake committed to encouraging wildlife such as frogs, newts, fish, insects, ducks and more!
- We have signage all around our park informing our guests on the different animals and species that reside here.
- All chemicals/cleaning products used are environmentally friendly.
- Owl and hedgehog boxes are placed around the park.
- Plenty of bird feeders
- Onsite utility vehicle charging point with plans to add more to encourage our customers.
- Outdoor swimming pool is heated by an heat source air pump.
- PV Solar panels to supply electric to our reception block.
- We only purchase our electric through a Green Energy Contract.
- Waste is managed through our contracts with Veolia. We encourage all our customers to recycle. To promote environmental awareness to reduce single use electric by offering free water refills.
- Collecting rainwater in water butts to water plants.
Ecotourism at caravan parks fosters numerous positive impacts, aligning nature-based experiences with environmental conservation. Firstly, it promotes appreciation for biodiversity, as visitors engage in activities like bird watching, hiking, and wildlife observation. These interactions often lead to heightened environmental awareness and support for conservation efforts.
Caravan parks typically adhere to eco-friendly practices, such as sustainable construction, energy efficiency, and waste reduction, setting a green standard for travellers. They also invest in environmental education programs, enlightening guests about the significance of preserving fragile ecosystems.
We at Manor Wood are very proud to have been awarded the David Bellamy Gold Conservation award, and we continue to strive to encourage wildlife conservation.
